As the heart of the home, the kitchen should meet the homeowner’s needs and complement their lifestyle. In this project, the existing kitchen was beginning to show its age; it was completely outdated, tiny, and severely lacked both the cabinet and countertop space required for daily life. The homeowners contacted us with one primary goal in mind: to significantly improve the functionality and footprint of the space while still honoring the home's deep roots.

Because this house is over 150 years old and located in Geneva’s Historic District, the project came with a unique set of strict parameters. We were required to ensure that absolutely nothing visible from the street could be altered. Given that the home sits on a highly visible corner lot, expanding the space proved to be an exceptionally challenging design puzzle that required meticulous planning to solve.

As is common with historic renovations, the age of the house led to a multitude of hidden discoveries once the walls were opened. We uncovered poorly run electrical work, a complete lack of foundation beneath the home, and multiple structural issues that demanded extensive additional framing to ensure the home was safe, sound, and built to last another century.

Despite these hurdles, our team executed a flawless kitchen addition. We were able to seamlessly blend the new construction with the old, keeping the authentic look and feel of the home entirely intact. Inside, the transformation is staggering: the new layout more than doubles the overall footprint of the kitchen and triples the cabinetry and countertop space.

In the end, this remodeling transformed a cramped, outdated layout into a luxurious and functional haven, perfectly suited for modern living without losing its historic charm.
